Julian Alvarez transfer saga and Barcelona's false‑nine plans
FC Barcelona continues to chase Argentine striker Julian Alvarez from Atlético Madrid, but the Spanish club has repeatedly refused to sell the player. Sporting director Deco travelled to Madrid to meet Alvarez’s agent Fernando Hidalgo in an effort to revive talks.
With Robert Lewandowski’s departure leaving a void at centre‑forward, head coach Hansi Flick has been preparing internal alternatives. The coaching staff have tested a false‑nine system during pre‑season, focusing on Dani Olmo, Fermin López, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal, while also keeping Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi as possible options. Barcelona has set an internal deadline of 10 August to conclude the Alvarez deal, after which the club will rely on the internal candidates if the transfer does not materialise.
