Julian Assange represents a ‘fifth estate’ for media, says ex-CIA analyst

Former CIA analyst Ray McGovern has characterized Julian Assange as a central figure in the creation of a ‘fifth estate’—an alternative media landscape designed to counter the influence of intelligence services on mainstream outlets.

Speaking on the 20th anniversary of WikiLeaks, McGovern argued that traditional media, often referred to as the ‘fourth estate,’ has been co-opted by governments and intelligence agencies in various countries, including the US, UK, and Germany. He suggested that organizations like WikiLeaks provide a necessary and secure platform for whistleblowers to expose classified information, such as CIA hacking tools and illegal mass surveillance, without the same level of institutional control.

Assange, who co-founded WikiLeaks in 2006, recently indicated a potential return to public life following a legal deal with the United States and his release from British custody. McGovern expressed hope regarding this return, viewing it as a significant development for those seeking to disclose sensitive information.
