Julian Barnes questions artistic progress at Princess of Asturias Awards

British writer Julian Barnes, recipient of the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Literature, challenged the notion that the arts follow a progressive evolution where each new movement improves upon the last. During his award ceremony speech in Oviedo, Barnes argued that while science, technology, and politics experience linear progress, the arts often express “new versions of ancient truths.”

To illustrate his perspective, Barnes described a vision of artists and writers from different centuries engaging in a continuous dialogue. He referenced various interpretations of William Shakespeare and the narrative complexities of Don Quixote to highlight how literary techniques like metafiction and intertextuality allow works to remain modern across eras. He concluded that rather than a succession of superior styles, art should be viewed as a conversation between creators across time.
