Julian Curo Churata dies in Louisiana ICE detention center

Julian Curo Churata, a carpenter, has died while in custody at the Richwood Correctional Center in Monroe, Louisiana. His wife, Veronica Ramirez, reported that she learned of his death via a call from a funeral home rather than from immigration authorities.

ICE officials stated that guards found Churata in a “medical emergency” the day prior to his death. He was transported to Ochsner LSU Health Monroe Medical Center on September 28. While authorities are still investigating the cause of death, civil rights advocates have raised concerns regarding ignored medical emergencies within detention facilities.
