Julian Dobbs files defamation lawsuit against Derek Jones

A federal defamation lawsuit has emerged within the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) involving Bishop Julian Dobbs and Archbishop Derek Jones. The legal dispute, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama, centers on allegations that Dobbs mishandled or “absconded with” chaplaincy funds.

Evidence presented in the case includes a 2020 report by Archbishop Foley Beach, which investigated similar claims. That investigation concluded that a specific charge regarding $3,750 in misdirected checks did not support findings of impropriety or personal diversion of funds. Despite this prior clearance, the allegations have resurfaced in public forums and legal filings, prompting Dobbs to sue for defamation.

Attorneys for Jones and the Special Jurisdiction of the Armed Forces and Chaplains have filed a motion to dismiss the complaint. The litigation highlights internal tensions regarding the handling of financial accusations and the use of secular courts to resolve ecclesiastical grievances.
