Barcelona President Laporta Pressures Atletico Madrid on Julian Alvarez Deal
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has publicly stated that the club has submitted a formal offer for Atletico Madrid striker Julián Álvarez and set a deadline for a response by the end of July. He warned that a big club “cannot afford to have unhappy players” and urged Atletico to “make an easy departure” for the Argentine, who has expressed a desire to leave and fulfil his dream of playing for Barcelona.
Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Ángel Gil repeatedly rejected the proposal, declaring Álvarez “non‑negotiable” and refusing any offer below €100 million, adding the club would not accept €150 million or €200 million. The club’s release clause stands at €500 million until 2030. Owner Apollo Sports Capital has instructed Gil to adopt a “hard‑line” stance and not concede on price.
Álvarez, who helped Argentina reach the World Cup final, has said a move would be “best for everyone”. While Barcelona remains the frontrunner, other clubs such as Arsenal have shown interest, but the Catalans maintain that their offer will not remain open indefinitely.
