Julian Thompson sparks controversy over migrant boat remarks

Major-General Julian Thompson, a 92-year-old veteran who commanded the 3 Commando Brigade during the Falklands War, has sparked controversy following remarks regarding migrants crossing the English Channel.

In a documentary on mass immigration, Thompson stated, ‘I would shoot them,’ referring to the vessels used by migrants. He later clarified to the Mail on Sunday that his intention was to aim gunfire at the boats themselves rather than the occupants. Thompson expressed frustration with the government's handling of the situation, suggesting that a failure to stop the crossings could lead to social unrest.

The Home Office responded to the comments by warning that anyone attempting to take the law into their own hands would face ‘serious criminal consequences.’ Additionally, Conservative politicians stated that opening fire on migrant boats would be ‘completely wrong.’
