Julie, Portugal’s last circus elephant, moves to Alentejo sanctuary

Julie, the last elephant used in Portuguese circuses, has begun a new life at the Pangea Sanctuary in the Alentejo region of southern Portugal. The move follows a 2018 ban on wild animals in circuses, a law that came into full effect in 2024 to allow organizations time to find suitable habitats for animals in transition.

The 1,000-acre sanctuary was established to provide a natural environment for elephants coming from zoos and circuses across Europe. The Alentejo region was specifically selected for its warm climate, which mimics the native habitats of African elephants.

Since arriving in June, Julie has shown signs of positive adjustment. Pangea Sanctuary Manager Ryan Hockley noted that she has gained approximately 100 kilograms, suggesting the weight increase is likely muscle resulting from increased exercise and 24-hour access to various habitats.
