Julio de España sentenced to prison for sexual assault in Alicante

The Provincial Court of Alicante has sentenced Julio de España, a gastroenterologist and former president of the Corts and the Diputación of Alicante, to one year and six months in prison for the sexual assault of a patient.

The incident occurred on August 7, 2023, at a private clinic in Alicante. The court found that during a medical examination for food intolerances, De España touched the patient’s genitals without medical justification or prior notification, violating medical practice standards. The victim, a nurse, suffered acute post-traumatic stress disorder and moderate anxiety as a result of the assault.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court imposed two years of supervised release and a four-year disqualification from any profession involving regular contact with minors. De España is also required to pay 12,000 euros in compensation to the victim and is prohibited from contacting or approaching her for three years.

The court acquitted De España of sexual assault charges involving a second patient and of two counts of degrading treatment, citing insufficient evidence. The ruling is not yet final and may be appealed to the High Court of Justice of the Valencian Community.
