Julio Millán opts for PSOE primaries for Jaén mayoralty
Julio Millán, the current mayor of Jaén and secretary general of the local PSOE, has announced his intention to undergo a primary election process to secure his candidacy for the 2027 municipal elections. By making this request, Millán is renouncing the right to automatic re-election typically granted to sitting mayors under the party’s federal statutes.
Millán stated that he seeks the “endorsement of the membership” to strengthen the party’s project for the city. He has personally requested that the relevant federal, regional, and provincial bodies open the primary calendar for Jaén, aiming for a process to take place in September 2026.
This move coincides with the PSOE of Andalusia beginning its broader primary process on September 4. This regional initiative aims to select candidates for mayoralties in the eight provincial capitals and municipalities with more than 20,000 inhabitants for the May 2027 elections. While sitting mayors are generally exempt from primaries unless requested by over 50% of local members, Millán’s decision to opt into the process marks a significant departure from standard procedure in Jaén.
