Julius Johansen claims leader's jersey in Volta a Portugal prologue

The 87th edition of the Volta a Portugal opened on 5 August 2026 with a 6.5‑km individual time trial in Lisbon’s Belém district. Danish rider Julius Johansen of UAE Team Emirates‑XRG recorded the fastest time of 7 minutes 12 seconds, four seconds ahead of Portuguese teammate Rui Oliveira, who briefly held the race lead. Rafael Reis completed the podium in third place, while Luca Giaimi finished fourth, giving the Emirati squad three of the top four positions.

Johansen’s victory awarded him the first yellow leader’s jersey of the race, marking his fourth win of the 2026 season, all in short time trials. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro praised the event as a “motivo de união e mobilização” for the country, highlighting its role in promoting tourism and national cohesion. The race will continue with a 157‑km stage from Lourinhã to Queluz on 6 August, featuring several climbs and intermediate sprints. Traffic restrictions have been imposed in Elvas for the third stage, affecting parking and vehicle flow on 7‑8 August.

The prologue attracted a large crowd, with notable figures such as the President of the Portuguese Olympic Committee and the mayor of Lisbon in attendance, underscoring the event’s significance in the national sporting calendar.
