Julius Malema says EFF may join GNU if DA and FF Plus withdraw

Julius Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), stated that his party would consider joining South Africa’s Government of National Unity (GNU) if the Democratic Alliance (DA) and Freedom Front Plus were to withdraw from the coalition.

Speaking during an election campaign in Naledi, Soweto, Malema emphasized that while the EFF is not opposed to participating in the GNU, the party would not abandon its political principles to secure government positions. He framed the potential move as a way to use power to benefit the black masses rather than being controlled by white political interests.

These remarks come as political parties intensify campaigning ahead of the local government elections scheduled for 4 November 2026. The debate over coalition arrangements is expected to be a central factor in determining governance, particularly in major areas like Johannesburg.
