Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg holds 94 patent families

The Julius-Maximilians-Universität (JMU) in Würzburg holds a patent portfolio consisting of 94 patent families as of January 31, 2026. According to the Servicezentrum Forschung und Technologietransfer (SFT), the Life Sciences sector is a primary driver of innovation at the university, accounting for 60 percent of inventions over the last decade and approximately 85 percent of IP-based spin-offs in the last five years.

These patents cover a wide range of fields, including diagnostics, biotechnology, digital health, and medical technology. Dr. Iris Zwirner-Baier, head of the SFT, noted that robust patents are essential for navigating the long and capital-intensive development processes required to bring new therapies and medical products to market. One example of this research-to-business transition is the biotech company CatalYm, which originated from Würzburg research and is currently developing a new cancer immunotherapy.
