Spain braces for new heat dome with temperatures up to 44 °C
The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and private meteorologists warn that a new heat dome will develop over the Iberian Peninsula in late July 2026. Forecasts predict interior temperatures exceeding 40 °C, with peaks of 44 °C forecast for Córdoba and about 42 °C for Toledo, Zaragoza and Ciudad Real. Heat alerts – orange in the Vegas del Guadiana (Badajoz), Granada, Huelva and the mountainous area of Ourense, and yellow in other provinces – have been activated. The extreme heat raises wildfire danger to very high or extreme levels across much of the country. Nighttime temperatures are expected to stay above 20 °C, producing tropical nights, while wind gusts of up to 80 km/h are forecast for the Cádiz coast. Authorities advise the public to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and follow precautionary measures. The heat wave is projected to persist through the weekend, with the hottest days forecast for Friday and Sunday.
