2025 Baden‑Württemberg train crash kills three, injures dozens
On July 27, 2025 a passenger train in the southeastern state of Baden‑Württemberg derailed near Riedlingen after a landslide, killing three people and seriously injuring 36 of the 36 passengers aboard.
A similar tragedy occurred on July 27, 2021 at a waste‑incineration facility in Leverkusen, Germany, where an explosion and subsequent fire claimed seven lives and injured about 30 workers, many severely. The incident forced the closure of several nearby highways and sent a smoke plume over 60 km into the Ruhr region.
Earlier, on July 27, 2001, five armed men seized the car of German embassy trade attaché Rainer Berns in Sanaa, Yemen; he was released on September 24. The same date marks the 1996 Centennial Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta, USA, which killed two and wounded more than 100, carried out by a perpetrator linked to extremist ideologies. In sports, July 27, 1986 saw American cyclist Greg LeMond become the first U.S. rider to win the Tour de France.
