Jumbo acquires former Haier factory in Romania for logistics hub

Greek retailer Jumbo is expanding its footprint in Romania by acquiring a 63,400-square-meter facility in Ariceștii Rahtivani, Prahova County. The property, located north of Bucharest, was previously owned by the Chinese company Haier, which ceased refrigerator production there in early 2025.

Jumbo plans to convert the former factory into a distribution center to support its infrastructure needs. This acquisition marks the company’s second major real estate purchase in Romania this year, following the acquisition of a former Habitex facility in Baia Mare, which will house a new hypermarket.

Apostolos Vakakis, founder and president of Jumbo, stated that the company intends to invest heavily in Romania with the goal of doubling its current number of stores. Jumbo has operated in the Romanian market since 2016 and currently manages 20 hypermarkets in the country. The company reported record annual revenues of 1.23 billion euros last year and employs over 1,500 people through its Romanian subsidiary.
