June 17 2026 Lunar Occultation of Venus Visible Across North America

On 17 June 2026 the Moon will pass directly in front of Venus, creating a rare daytime occultation visible from much of North America. The thin waxing crescent Moon will cover Venus for roughly an hour, beginning around 15:30 EDT and ending near 17:00 EDT, with the planet re‑emerging on the Moon’s illuminated edge.

Astronomers advise using binoculars or a small telescope while keeping the Sun safely blocked, as the event occurs in broad daylight. Observers in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and Venezuela can expect clear views if the sky is cloud‑free, while the Beehive Cluster (M44) will be nearby in the evening sky after sunset.

The phenomenon, last seen from the region in December 2015, offers a unique photographic opportunity, but safety precautions are essential to avoid accidental exposure to the Sun.
