Jung Chang explores personal and political ties to China in new memoirs

Author Jung Chang, known for her works on Chinese history, has released new memoirs titled ‘Fly, Wild Swans’, which intertwine her personal family history with the political evolution of China. After leaving communist China for Britain at age twenty, Chang became the first person from communist China to earn a linguistics doctorate from a British university.

The new work focuses on the emotional toll of political divisions, specifically the author's inability to be with her dying mother due to the political climate. While her previous work examined three generations of women, these memoirs highlight how her personal life has been shaped by China's transition from an isolated state to a global power. Her writings remain banned in China, where increased control over freedom of expression under President Xi Jinping has further strained her connection to her homeland.
