Jung Jeom-sik cites ‘prisoner’s dilemma’ over Lee Hwa-young’s parole request
Jung Jeom-sik, floor leader of the People Power Party, has characterized the relationship between President Lee Jae-myung and former Gyeonggi Province Vice Governor Lee Hwa-young as a ‘prisoner’s dilemma.’ This follows Lee Hwa-young’s public request for parole from the President.
Lee Hwa-young, who was sentenced to seven years and eight months in prison regarding the Ssangbangwool Group’s illegal remittances to North Korea, has reportedly expressed frustration with the President’s lack of action regarding his parole. Jung Jeom-sik suggested that if the President remains indifferent to the request for pardon or parole, Lee Hwa-young may provide testimony unfavorable to the President during future trials.
Jung further alleged that the President may be in a difficult position due to potential vulnerabilities held by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un related to the remittance case. He urged the President to face judicial proceedings transparently and called on the judiciary to revoke the bail of individuals currently involved in state affairs, such as Jeong Jin-sang and Kim Yong, to ensure justice is upheld.
