Junge Union calls for Bundeswehr deployment at Berlin student protests

The Berlin-Mitte branch of Junge Union, the youth organization of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has called for the preemptive deployment of the Bundeswehr to manage upcoming student protests in Berlin scheduled for October 31.

In an Instagram post featuring an AI-generated image of soldiers near the Brandenburg Gate, the group cited recent unrest in Paris as a reason to protect the free democratic order and prevent potential terror. The proposal has drawn significant criticism from legal experts and social media users, who argue the request is unconstitutional. Under the German Basic Law, the military's domestic deployment is strictly limited to supporting police against armed insurgents during a state of emergency when civil order is under direct threat.

The planned demonstrations, organized by groups such as ‘Gen Z steht auf’ and ‘Gen Z regelt’, aim to address issues including school funding, affordable living, climate protection, and opposition to potential mandatory military service. While organizers have emphasized a commitment to non-violence, the call for military intervention has sparked intense debate regarding constitutional boundaries and the nature of the upcoming protests.
