Chile and Argentina face sovereignty tensions over Strait of Magellan

Chile and Argentina are navigating diplomatic tensions regarding sovereignty over the Strait of Magellan. Chilean President José Antonio Kast reaffirmed Chile's absolute sovereignty over the strategic maritime route, citing international treaties. While Chile maintains that its sovereignty is robustly established and will not demand a formal repeal of Argentina's 2021 decree, Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez noted that a document to correct Argentina's stance has been ready for signature for months and is awaiting President Javier Milei's approval.

In a separate development, President Milei is scheduled to deliver a national broadcast this Thursday regarding the Malvinas sovereignty issue. This follows recent comments from U.S. officials regarding the conflict.

Economically, Chile's Imacec index fell by 1.5% in July, a decline attributed to mining production issues, maintenance, and adverse weather conditions. Meanwhile, the Argentine government has rejected claims of an economic crisis, asserting that the country's economic situation is improving.
