Junín proposed as new capital of Buenos Aires Province

Former national deputy Miguel Saredi and essayist Luis Gotte have proposed relocating the capital of Buenos Aires Province from La Plata to Junín. The initiative, detailed in the book ‘Junín, capital de los bonaerenses’, aims to decentralize state management and move political decision-making closer to productive regions.

The proposal suggests moving the governor and a reduced provincial Executive Branch to Junín, leveraging its location within the Humid Pampa and its connections to technological and university corridors. To ensure fiscal viability, the authors argue that the move would not require new construction or massive spending, but rather a functional reorganization using existing infrastructure.

Under this plan, the province would adopt a distributed territorial model: Junín, Tandil, and Bahía Blanca would form a development axis to strengthen interior municipalities; La Plata would focus on its educational and cultural profile; and Mar del Plata would remain the primary tourist hub. The authors argue this shift is necessary to address demographic imbalances, reducing the overcrowding and resource strain in the metropolitan area while revitalizing the interior.
