JCE reaches 4 million identity card renewals in Dominican Republic

The Junta Central Electoral (JCE) of the Dominican Republic has reached a milestone in its national identity card renewal process, recognizing Eduard Mercedes Rosario as the fourth million citizen to receive the new document. The recognition ceremony took place in Cambita Garabitos, San Cristóbal.

JCE President Román Andrés Jáquez Liranzo issued a warning that the previous identity card format will no longer be accepted for official purposes starting April 1, 2027. Failure to renew by this deadline could result in ‘civil inhabilitation,’ affecting the ability of citizens to perform essential tasks such as banking, commercial activities, employment, studying, and exercising the right to vote.

Officials urged the population to complete the renewal process well in advance to avoid long queues and delays expected between January and March 2027. Currently, the JCE reports that out of a total of 8,730,372 eligible citizens, over 4 million have already received the new card, marking the halfway point of the scheduled one-year renewal period.
