Junta Central Electoral updates ID renewal rules and survey regulations

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) of the Dominican Republic has implemented several significant administrative changes and clarifications.

Regarding national identification, the JCE has announced that the deadline to renew the national identity card (cédula) is March 31, 2027. After this date, the old format will no longer be valid for banking, legal, or administrative procedures. To facilitate this, the JCE has removed the previous restriction that required citizens to renew based on their birth month and has opened a new high-tech service center at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) for immediate issuance. Currently, approximately 62.3% of the population still needs to renew.

In electoral regulation, the JCE has provisionally suspended an article that prohibited the publication of electoral surveys outside of official campaign periods. This suspension comes while the judiciary reviews the legality of the restriction, which was challenged for potentially infringing on freedom of expression.

Additionally, the JCE addressed a social media controversy regarding a marriage involving a trans couple. The board clarified that the union was legally registered between a man and a woman according to their official birth certificates and identity documents, thereby complying with the Dominican Constitution.
