JCE celebrates Abigail Mejía centenary; FILEM 2026 focuses on women authors
In the Dominican Republic, the Junta Central Electoral (JCE) held several activities to commemorate the centenary of the works of suffragist Abigail Mejía. Organized by the Gender Equality Policy Commission, the events included the circulation of ‘Por Entre Frivolidades’ and a presentation of the second edition of Mejía’s work. The initiative aims to honor the women who secured voting rights in the country through constitutional reforms and early suffrage trials.
In Mexico, preparations are underway for the 2026 International Book Fair of the State of Mexico (FILEM). Scheduled from October 16 to 24 in Toluca, the fair will operate under the theme ‘Más autoras, más mundos’ (More female authors, more worlds). The event will focus on increasing the visibility of women writers, addressing the fact that women currently represent only about 30% of published texts in the sector. The 2026 edition will expand its reach beyond the Plaza de los Mártires to 12 alternative venues, including locations in Tenancingo and Amecameca.
