Junta de Andalucía announces environmental restoration and forest management projects
The Regional Government of Andalusia (Junta de Andalucía) is awaiting judicial authorization to begin restoration efforts at Las Palmerillas in Roquetas de Mar, Almería. The site was severely impacted by an illegal landfill that operated for over a decade until its closure in late 2022. The landfill accumulated approximately 19,000 square meters of waste, including agricultural debris, construction materials, tires, and plastics. A landowner was previously sentenced to over two years in prison for environmental crimes related to the site.
In a separate environmental initiative, the Junta de Andalucía has launched a public tender for the harvesting of 1,500 tons of biomass and various timber quantities within the Sierra de Cardeña y Montoro Natural Park in Córdoba. The project aims to implement silvicultural treatments to improve forest conservation and reduce wildfire risks by thinning dense pine stands and managing accumulated vegetation fuel.
