Costa Rica lottery prizes rise as Mexico addresses digital security
In Costa Rica, the Junta de Protección Social (JPS) has launched the 2026 Gordo Navideño lottery. The jackpot has increased to ₡9,000 million, with the top prize per fraction reaching ₡50 million. To combat fraud, the JPS is implementing new security measures, including anti-copy ink and QR codes for each fraction. The price per fraction has also risen by 25% to ₡2,500.
In Mexico, several developments regarding digital security and law are underway. The Commission of Economy, Commerce, and Competitiveness approved a draft regarding digital services, a presidential initiative aimed at fostering responsible use and establishing a ‘safe harbor’ regime for internet providers.
Simultaneously, the Secretaría Anticorrupción y Buen Gobierno (SABG) is investigating a potential data leak involving over 12.9 million records, including banking and contact information, allegedly offered on a messaging platform. Additionally, Mexican senators are calling for a national cybersecurity policy to protect the country's sovereignty and economy against evolving digital threats.
