Juntos por el Perú lawmakers conduct nighttime visits to Pedro Castillo
Members of the Juntos por el Perú (JPP) political party have been conducting frequent nighttime visits to former President Pedro Castillo at the Barbadillo maximum-security prison in Ate. Reports indicate that these visits, occurring between late July and early August, often begin after 7:00 p.m. and can extend until midnight, utilizing private vehicles and parliamentary credentials to bypass conventional visiting hours.
Specific instances recorded include visits by senators Iber Antenor Maraví Olarte and José Mercedes Castillo Terrones, as well as deputies Jennifer Paredes and Jessica Sadith Pérez Quispe. Some visitors reportedly arrived in private vehicles driven by congressional staff.
JPP deputy Svieta Fernández defended the actions, stating that the visits are a legitimate exercise of parliamentary prerogatives and that all entries were properly registered. Fernández argued that there is no clandestinity involved and asserted that Castillo has the right to engage in political conversations, characterizing him as a “political prisoner.” She further noted that the opposition party faces continuous scrutiny from the media.
