Salvador Illa avoids censure in Catalan Parliament amid housing and anniversary protests

During the General Policy Debate in the Catalan Parliament, several political developments occurred. The opposition party Junts presented a motion of censure against President Salvador Illa, accusing him of mismanagement and failing to defend Catalan interests. However, the motion failed as the PSC, ERC, and Comuns parties voted against it, preventing Illa from becoming the first president of the Generalitat to be censured.

In terms of social policy, Illa announced the ‘Plan 20,000’, an 878-million-euro initiative aimed at creating 20,000 new residential places for the elderly and people with disabilities by 2030 to address long waiting lists. Additionally, the Parliament rejected a proposal for joint housing purchases by the Generalitat for citizens aged 40 to 60.

Separately, the ninth anniversary of the October 1 referendum was marked by demonstrations in Barcelona and other cities. Organized by the Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC), approximately 600 people marched through the city to demand amnesty and independence. The commemorations included incidents of tension between protesters and police near the Via Laietana.
