Jura police report over 50 fraud cases involving fake officers
The Jura Cantonal Police have reported more than 50 confirmed cases of fraud involving individuals impersonating police officers since the beginning of the year. The perpetrators, often young people, specifically target elderly residents.
The scam has evolved to include phone number spoofing, where criminals manipulate caller ID to make it appear as though they are calling from official police numbers, including 117 or 032 420 65 65. During these calls, the fraudsters claim to be conducting investigations, report stolen bank cards, or warn that the victim's assets are in danger.
Following the call, an accomplice posing as a police officer typically visits the victim's home to collect valuables, such as jewelry, cash, or bank cards. Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant, never provide PIN codes or bank cards to strangers, and always verify the identity of anyone claiming to be an officer by calling the police station directly.
