Juraj Kukura reflects on exile and political persecution

Renowned actor Juraj Kukura has opened up about the personal and professional hardships he faced due to political persecution in former Czechoslovakia. During a discussion regarding an upcoming feature-length documentary about his life, the 79-year-old actor revealed that he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison and had all his property confiscated when he was forced into exile.

Kukura noted that the loss of material wealth was secondary to the loss of personal memories, including childhood photographs, images of his son, and newspaper clippings. He shared that he was unable to recover these items after the revolution. He also recounted losing a cottage twice—once under the former regime and again through subsequent legal processes.

Reflecting on a life marked by displacement, Kukura mentioned being expelled from various institutions throughout his life, including a construction vocational school, a football club, military training due to his long hair, and the Academy of Performing Arts. He also noted his recent departure from the Arena Theatre after helping to fund its reconstruction.
