Jurists and former ministers hold demonstration at USP for democracy

Legal experts, former Supreme Federal Court (STF) presidents, professors, and civil society representatives gathered at the University of São Paulo (USP) Law School to hold an act in defense of the Constitution, democracy, and human rights. Organized by the XI de Agosto Academic Center and the Dom Paulo Evaristo Arns Human Rights Defense Commission, the event featured the reading of the ‘Manifesto for the Constitution, for Democracy and for Human Rights.’

The manifesto, signed by over 700 individuals including former STF presidents Celso de Mello, Antonio Cezar Peluso, and Rosa Weber, emphasizes the necessity of maintaining the independence of the three branches of government and the system of checks and balances. While the document does not name the presidential candidates Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro directly, it calls for support for candidates who respect democratic institutions and do not intend to concentrate power within the Presidency.

Separately, seven former Ministers of Health and the current minister, Alexandre Padilha, issued a letter warning of potential risks to the Unified Health System (SUS) in the event of a Flávio Bolsonaro victory. The group criticized the management of the Covid-19 pandemic under Jair Bolsonaro and highlighted recent advancements in public health under the current administration.
