Philipp Türmer, leader of the SPD youth organization Jusos, has expressed openness to abolishing the party's dual leadership model in favor of a single chairperson. Speaking to the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung, Türmer suggested that while he could envision a woman serving as the sole chair, he could not imagine a man in that position. He argued that the existing dual leadership system, intended to empower women, has instead resulted in female leaders absorbing the majority of criticism while acting as a 'shield' for their male counterparts.

The debate comes ahead of the SPD party convention in January, where the entire leadership will be re-elected following the resignation of co-chair Bärbel Bas. While current party leader Lars Klingbeil advocates for maintaining a dual leadership consisting of one man and one woman, Türmer has also criticized Klingbeil's performance, questioning his strategic direction and suitability for continued leadership if he remains in his roles as Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor.

Türmer noted that the party could decide on a new leadership structure through a party convention resolution. He also mentioned Manuela Schwesig as a credible figure for leadership, citing her performance in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
