Jussiape declares calamity after storm collapses local hospital roof
A severe storm with strong wind gusts struck the municipality of Jussiape in the Chapada Diamantina region of Bahia, causing significant infrastructure damage. The most critical impact occurred at the Casa de Saúde Ana Medrado Luz, the town's only hospital, where part of the roof collapsed after wind pressure lifted the metal tiles.
Mayor José Luz has declared a state of calamity for the municipality due to the destruction. The hospital has been completely closed to ensure safety, leaving local health services at a standstill. Eight patients were present during the incident; they were evacuated, with some transferred to the neighboring municipality of Barra da Estiva and others redirected to a Basic Health Unit (UBS) in Jussiape.
In addition to the hospital damage, the storm caused power outages and destroyed local landmarks, including the town's welcome sign. Local Civil Defense and state government resources, including ambulances, are assisting with the emergency response and patient transport.
