Justice Counselor María Jesús San José Calls for Declassification of Secret Documents in Spain

María Jesús San José, the Justice and Human Rights counselor of Lakua, urged the Spanish State to declassify official secret documents and stop concealing records that could aid families of victims such as Pertur, Lasa and Zabala. In an interview with Europa Press, she linked the request to the 50th anniversary of the disappearance of former ETA political‑military leader Eduardo Moreno Bergareche, emphasizing that revising the Official Secrets Law is a “fundamental step” for societal healing.

San José also defended the legality of prison grade progressions and sentence flexibilisation under article 100.2 of the penitentiary regulations for ETA prisoners. She noted that 107 ETA inmates remain in Basque prisons, with about 90 % having asked for the application of state‑of‑law norms, and called for greater public awareness that reintegration is a constitutional mandate, not impunity.

The counselor’s appeal seeks greater transparency for families of victims of past political violence and aims to strengthen the rule of law in Spain.
