Justice Department investigates 2022 Supreme Court abortion ruling leak
The Department of Justice is conducting a criminal investigation into the 2022 leak of a Supreme Court draft opinion that overturned Roe v. Wade. The investigation, led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia under Jeanine Pirro, has reportedly intensified in recent weeks.
Prosecutors have issued grand jury subpoenas for testimony and are seeking information from individuals who were employed by the Supreme Court at the time of the leak. Senior prosecutor Carlton Davis has been assigned to the matter to work alongside career prosecutors.
The leak occurred when a draft of the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization was provided to Politico two months before the official ruling. While Chief Justice John Roberts ordered an internal investigation that failed to identify the culprit, federal prosecutors are now pursuing the matter. Some officials have noted that statutes of limitations for potentially relevant laws may expire this spring.
