Corey Lewandowski faces DOJ criminal investigation over DHS role

The U.S. Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into Corey Lewandowski, a longtime ally of President Donald Trump, regarding allegations that he profited from his position at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The probe follows a criminal referral from the DHS Inspector General, which had been investigating contracting practices during the tenure of former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.

Prosecutors are reportedly examining whether Lewandowski, who served as a top adviser and de facto chief of staff, improperly influenced the awarding of government contracts. Specific areas of interest include potential contract misconduct, kickbacks, and whether Lewandowski leveraged his influence to solicit private consulting work from Middle Eastern countries regarding visa issues. Some reports indicate investigators found evidence that he may have been involved in the improper awarding of contracts, including a $220 million advertising campaign involving Noem.

Lewandowski was officially designated as a Special Government Employee, a role intended for limited service, but sources suggest he wielded significant authority over department spending. Lewandowski’s attorney, Adam Trigg, has denied all allegations of wrongdoing, stating that his client has not been contacted by the Justice Department and was serving his country in a voluntary capacity.
