Justice Department moves to dismiss FBI request in Mar-a-Lago case
The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a motion asking U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon to dismiss an emergency request from current and former FBI agents. The agents are seeking guidance regarding restrictions imposed on the Mar-a-Lago investigation.
In the 20-page motion, Acting Deputy Attorney General R. Trent McCotter and U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones accused the agents of using “nothing more but conjecture, fear-mongering, and an apparent motive to delay.”
The FBI personnel, described as experts in handling classified information, seek assurances that testifying about material in former special counsel Jack Smith’s report would not violate Judge Cannon’s order prohibiting the disclosure of Volume II. The agents expressed concerns regarding potential court-imposed sanctions or contempt findings if they do not receive clarification on the restrictions.
