Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani resigns from Lahore High Court
Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani has resigned from his position at the Lahore High Court (LHC), submitting his resignation to President Asif Ali Zardari. While citing personal reasons and health issues following recent surgery, Justice Kayani explicitly stated that his conscience would not allow him to continue under current conditions.
In his resignation letter, he criticized the 26th and 27th constitutional amendments, arguing they have compromised the independence and institutional dignity of the high courts. He expressed concern over increasing executive control regarding the appointment and transfer of judges, noting that such interference undermines public trust in the judiciary and affects the rights of ordinary citizens.
Justice Kayani previously served at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) before being transferred to the LHC in April. He was notably one of six IHC judges who had previously raised concerns regarding alleged interference by intelligence agencies in judicial affairs. During his career, he managed over 23,000 cases.
