Justice N V Anjaria: AI can assist justice but not decide cases

Supreme Court judge Justice N V Anjaria stated that while artificial intelligence can assist in the justice delivery system by analyzing large volumes of judicial data and identifying trends, it cannot serve as a decision-maker for individual cases. Speaking at the inauguration of the ‘India Digital ADR Summit-2026’ at the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) in Gandhinagar, Anjaria emphasized that AI should remain an aid rather than a tool to determine legal outcomes.

During the event, the ‘SAMYAK’ portal was launched as a digital initiative of the university’s International Digital Dispute Resolution Centre (IDDRC). Attorney General of India R Venkataramani also addressed the summit, advising law students to cultivate habits of questioning and verification. Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Sunita Agarwal supported the launch of the portal, noting the necessity for clear rules regarding the incorporation of AI into legal institutions.
