Justice Rajesh Bindal appointed NCLAT Chairperson

Former Supreme Court judge Justice Rajesh Bindal has been appointed as the Chairperson of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT). He succeeds Justice Ashok Bhushan, whose tenure ended on July 4, 2026. Since Justice Bhushan’s departure, Justice Yogesh Khanna has served as the officiating chairperson.

Justice Bindal previously served as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and spent over three years as a judge of the Supreme Court before retiring on April 15, 2026.

The appointment occurs as the Supreme Court of India increases scrutiny regarding the administrative independence of insolvency tribunals. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant recently expressed concerns regarding the Ministry of Corporate Affairs’ control over the NCLT and NCLAT, suggesting that tribunals require greater autonomy over appointments to prevent them from being “completely hijacked” by the ministry.
