Justice Samuel Alito addresses judicial intimidation and retirement rumors

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has addressed concerns regarding judicial intimidation and his own future on the bench. In an interview, Alito criticized threatening protests directed at justices, specifically citing incidents following the 2022 leak of the Dobbs draft opinion. He characterized these protests, which included demonstrations outside justices' private residences, as attempts to influence judicial decisions through improper means.

Alito expressed frustration that federal and local authorities, including the Department of Justice and prosecutors in Maryland and Virginia, failed to take action against those responsible for such intimidation. He noted that these actions contribute to a decline in public respect for the Court.

Addressing rumors regarding his tenure, the 76-year-old justice dismissed speculation that he would retire ahead of the 2026 midterm elections to ensure a conservative successor. Alito stated his intention to remain in his position through the current term, noting that while he has considered retirement, he does not feel physically or mentally unfit to serve. He indicated he would re-evaluate his decision next year.
