Justice Samuel Alito recuses from major climate change case
Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito has recused himself from the upcoming case Suncor Energy v. County Commissioners of Boulder County. The case, which is scheduled for oral arguments on October 5, examines whether federal law prevents local governments from suing energy companies for damages related to climate change.
Alito’s decision follows scrutiny regarding his financial holdings in the oil and gas industry. While he does not own stock in the primary defendants, Suncor Energy and ExxonMobil, his financial disclosures show investments in other energy companies, including ConocoPhillips and Phillips 66. Watchdog groups, such as Consumer Watchdog, had previously called for his recusal, arguing that his holdings could create a conflict of interest.
