Justice sought in decades-old murder cases in Peru and Germany

In two separate long-running legal cases, justice has been sought for victims of decades-old crimes.

A Peruvian court in Puno has sentenced a 49-year-old man to 35 years in prison for the 2008 murder of Aune Hartmann, a former German city councilor. Hartmann was killed near Lake Titicaca in Bolivia, a case that faced jurisdictional complexities involving German, Peruvian, and Bolivian authorities. The motive was identified as robbery, as Hartmann’s bank accounts were emptied following her death. The perpetrator had previously fled after avoiding indictment in Bolivia.

In Germany, prosecutors are seeking a life sentence for an 81-year-old man accused of the sexual assault and murder of American tourist Amy Lopez in Koblenz. The case, which has spanned nearly 32 years, is nearing a verdict. The defendant has admitted to the crime through his legal counsel, and the prosecution is requesting the maximum penalty, citing the extreme gravity of the offense.
