Justice Ujjal Bhuyan condemns police assault on student protesters

Supreme Court Justice Ujjal Bhuyan has expressed grave concern regarding the alleged physical assault of NEET student protesters by police personnel at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Speaking at a book launch for former secretary Yashovardhan Azad, Justice Bhuyan noted that the professional detachment expected of law enforcement officers appears to be disappearing.

The judge described the sight of young Indian Police Service officers personally assaulting demonstrators as “very, very distressing” and a matter of concern for a constitutional democracy. He emphasized that effective policing should be achieved without excessive force or the infringement of human rights.

Justice Bhuyan further highlighted the importance of police credibility and the necessity of adhering to the Constitution, impartiality, and the rule of law. He also addressed the rising instances of custodial torture and deaths in the country, characterizing custodial death as “one of the worst crimes in a civilised society governed by the rule of law.”
