Justin Gaethje sidelined until 2027 due to hand injuries

UFC lightweight champion Justin Gaethje has confirmed he will be sidelined until at least 2027 due to lingering bilateral hand injuries. The injuries were sustained during his June victory over Ilia Topuria at UFC Freedom 250, a bout in which Gaethje unified the lightweight titles.

Gaethje stated that he is currently unable to make full contact, noting, “I still can’t punch anything. Both of my hands are still hurt from the fight.” After competing twice in the first half of the year, the champion intends to spend the remainder of 2026 recovering.

Gaethje indicated he will consult with his family and team regarding his long-term future, including whether to continue competing or retire. While Ilia Topuria’s camp has expressed interest in an immediate rematch, Gaethje has not indicated a willingness to grant one. Potential challengers in the division include Arman Tsarukyan, Charles Oliveira, and Max Holloway.
