Justin Muturi condemns Garissa rally attack as ‘attempted assassination’

Former Attorney General and Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi has characterized the disruption of an opposition rally in Garissa as an ‘attempted assassination’. The incident occurred on Saturday, September 12, 2026, during a political engagement involving several opposition figures, including Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Nyali MP Mohamed Ali.

According to reports, approximately 50 youths attacked the gathering by hurling stones at leaders and supporters, forcing many to seek refuge in vehicles. The confrontation resulted in damage to several vehicles, including Muturi’s car, which sustained a partially destroyed windscreen. Security personnel attached to the leaders eventually intervened to disperse the youths and restore order.

Muturi has called on Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to conduct a thorough investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible. He warned that such political violence risks inciting fear among citizens and deepening national divisions, emphasizing that political disagreements should be resolved through democratic processes rather than violence.
