Justin Trudeau criticizes U.S. trade predictability in Rhode Island speech

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated during a question and answer session at Brown University that the United States has become an ‘extremely unpredictable’ partner. Speaking in Rhode Island, Trudeau argued that the current administration under President Donald Trump is ‘no longer working’ in the best interest of the American people.

Trudeau noted a shift from previous negotiations, claiming the current administration seeks ‘win-lose’ deals rather than ‘win-win’ agreements. He suggested this unpredictability makes it difficult for international allies to navigate relations and for businesses to commit to investments.

As an example of these tensions, Trudeau cited recent U.S. tariffs on Canadian aluminum and softwood lumber. He characterized these as self-harming policies, noting that because the U.S. lacks sufficient domestic aluminum production, the tariffs increase costs for American consumers on products such as beer cans.
