Justin Trudeau advises Mexico on USMCA negotiations and leadership

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau participated as a keynote speaker at the ‘México Siglo XXI’ event organized by the Fundación Telmex Telcel at the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City. Addressing an audience of approximately 10,000 scholarship students, Trudeau focused his remarks on leadership, personal excellence, and the importance of youth taking an active role in contemporary issues such as social justice and artificial intelligence regulation.

During the forum, Trudeau offered strategic advice regarding international relations and the upcoming USMCA (T-MEC) negotiations. He urged Mexico to maintain unity and avoid “falling into the trap” of unilateral pressures from Washington. He emphasized that in international politics, a “win-lose” logic is ineffective and can lead to long-term negative consequences for all parties involved.

Reflecting on his political career, Trudeau highlighted the importance of de-escalating conflicts and seeking strategic allies. He noted that Canada has previously demonstrated the strength to walk away from unfavorable deals to secure better outcomes, a tactic he suggested can be used to ensure equitable regional agreements. He also encouraged the youth to challenge the status quo and embrace continuous learning to achieve positive global impact.
