Justina Shiroka-Pula elected President of Kosovo

Justina Shiroka-Pula has been elected as the new President of Kosovo, receiving 81 votes in the 120-seat parliament. The election, which took place just minutes before the constitutional deadline, successfully averted the possibility of snap elections and ended a political deadlock that had lasted approximately 19 months.

Shiroka-Pula, a 73-year-old economist and former head of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo, was proposed by Prime Minister Albin Kurti. Her election was welcomed by international partners, including the EU and the UK, and described by Kurti as a sign of institutional stability.

Prior to her election, Shiroka-Pula had expressed deep reservations regarding the nature and functioning of the Specialist Chambers in The Hague, emphasizing the need for justice to be perceived as impartial and inclusive. Following her inauguration, she made official visits to memorial complexes in Prekaz, Rugova, and Demaçi to honor historical figures of Kosovo.
